Shield Of Ksour Essef
An ancient three-disc shield found in a Punic cemetery in 1909, not far from the city of Ksour Essef in the Mahdia Governorate in Tunisia.
This piece generally dates back to the 3rd century BC, and is of Italian origin and comes from southern Italy. Its discovery in Tunisia led researchers to link it to the expeditions of the Second Punic War led by the Carthaginian general Hannibal in Italy between 211 and 203 BC. The shield is currently housed in the Bardo National Museum in Tunis, along with the archaeological material found in the same tomb, and it remains, a century after its discovery, one of the great symbolic pieces in the ancient section to which it belongs.
